Society’s Lack of Education on Depression
Society as a whole uses the word “depression” with a lot of leeway. People say they’re depressed and then list several reasons why they are the way they are. What people often fail to realize is that depression is a sickness. It’s a mental disease that is diagnosed by a professional. While it is possible for someone to be depressed before they know it, the phrase, “I’m depressed.” Or “I have depression.” is loosely said. A large majority of society and the community saying these things don’t know about depression. One of the things several people don’t know, is that depression comes in various forms. Bipolar disorder is included with “types of depression” because the mood swings can sometimes take them into a depressive state. In addition to bipolar, there is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) (Types of Depression). SAD only happens during the colder, darker, winter months. Postpartum depression is a maternal disorder. Postpartum depression is what happens, sometimes, when a woman has a child. This can range from being very serious or less intense. This can range from suicidal tendencies to change in normal habits. One intense form of depression, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), happens before a woman starts her period (Types of Depression). Symptoms include mood swings, irritability, anxiety, trouble concentrating, fatigue, change in appetite, different sleep habits, overwhelming feelings, tension, and physical problems like bloating, breast tenderness, swelling, headaches, joint or muscle pain, however, PMDD is severely uncommon, and affects 2-10% of menstruating women (Types of Depression).
