Society can have a huge impact on people’s lives. Whether it is the new trends that influence people to dress a certain way or to drive a certain car, society impacts everyone in one way or another. Sometimes society has a harsh impact on people’s lives. Teenagers can be sucked into society’s standards and feel as though they are not pretty, athletic, creative, or smart enough. This can put them in a dark place that is hard to get out of and can ruin lives. Adults can also be harmfully affected by society. Adults who have lost their jobs or have gotten a divorce can see themselves as failures compared to others in society. Again, these are dark situations that can be difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel while going through them. In the novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley writes about this kind of impact caused by society. She writes about a man, Victor Frankenstein, who creates a creature so ugly that he is horrified by his own creation. Frankenstein abandons the creature and leaves it in the world by itself. The creature becomes an educated man who is just looking for companionship, but everyone is terrified by his appearance and rejects him. The creature in the novel experiences rejection from society because of his appearance, and he finds himself in a dark place. Because society labels the creature a monster, he becomes one.
