We are able to empathize with the person because we will assume he was scared the intruder meant to harm him or his family. What is foreign to us as human beings is the senseless violence toward those the public at large would deem innocent. The crime of mass killings is so puzzling of a concept to society as a whole that when one occurs it captivates the news cycle and is talked about for weeks after the events occur. The circus act surrounding these events portrayed by modern media about the events that occur further glorify the heinous actions of the perpetrator.
