Fahrenheit 451 is novel about a man named Guy Montag, who is a fireman who burns books in a futuristic American city which, according to Rafeeq O. Mcgiveron, is a 2026
“unthinking society so compulsively hedonistic”. In Montag’s state, firemen are not your usual firefighters because rather they start fires by burning books instead of putting fires out. The firefighters want to purge the world of notions that raise uncertainty and debate which inevitably comes from books. Their society is also more diverse than most mainly because; people do not read books, value and admire nature, find their true self meaning, think freely, and have yet to have profound conversations with other citizens. So as we begin to read on,
Montag goes to Beatty, his captain, for help, but we find out that he is just another bad person like the other people who want society to be controlled. We learn that Beatty is actually pretty knowledgeable about books, and for some time, he was passionate about books as well. Beatty begins to tell Montag about how their line of work came about, and Beatty takes a while to collect his thoughts about how he wants to tell the story and states the following: “Well, I’d say it really got started around about a thing called the Civil War. Even though our rule-book claims it was founded earlier. The fact is we didn’t get along well until photography came into its own.
Then—motion pictures in the early twentieth century. Radio. Television. Things began to have mass.” After explaining this, he says that the things that have populace, they become a nuisance at which is why books are considered a nuisance.
