Who Is To Blame For Violent Crimes

In the last years our news media has been bombarding us with reports of crimes of our youth. We have had teens walking into schools and movie theaters going on shooting rampages. We have watched helplessly while kids that are not old enough to vote, use shotguns and automatic rifles with precision and accuracy. We have tried to find someone to place the blame of these horrific crimes. It is easy to blame the parents for not rearing the children correctly. We do not look at the fact that the courts have taken the right of the parent away. We have blamed video games on their behavior and we have tried to blame movies, but we should be placing the blame where it is due, the kids. We have constantly been told that no child should be hit, but who steps in when parents come to court with black eyes, courtesy of their 17 year-old. Should we have parents that are threatened and afraid of their child (Ayers, 1997). Some parents have been arrested for simply disciplining their kids. When we have young people meticulously hunting and killing kids as well as adults without any remorse for a human life. When crimes of such magnitude are committed with weapons stolen from their own homes, the punishment should fit the crime. The blame of these crimes should not be on the parents, but the youths, society, and their peers. …show more content…
Sometimes crimes are committed by younger children just because of the fact that everyone knows their punishment will not be that severe, they are getting away with murder with just a slap of the wrist. When we have children that are plotting and planning massive murders there is something seriously wrong with our youth. Juveniles are committing serious crimes regardless of their culture or the country where they grew up (Junger-Tas, etc…, 2012). If youth crimes are dealt with like adults; jail time, prison time, and probation, I personally think a lot of these crimes will not

Every generation comes with its challenges. Linda J. Collier addresses a sympathetic and concerned audience as she uncovers an issue long swept under the rug: punishments of juveniles who commit adult crimes, such as murder, rape, etcetera. As a former university attorney and court appointed guardian for juveniles in legal trouble, she has firsthand knowledge of the ineffectiveness of the juvenile court system. While her use of thought provoking examples creates a strong argument, she fails to convince me that juveniles who commit serious crimes deserve to serve adult punishments. Collier begins her argument by recounting the incident of Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden, who had led a massacre in Jonesboro, Arkansas.…

The following article On Punishment and Teen Killers, by Jennifer Jenkins, who is a high school teacher, believes teens who commit crimes should go through the same consequences as anyone else. Jenkins has the lowest ethos because she uses more emotion rather than logical statistics to defend her argument. Jenkins provides an example of a teen crime, and how it occurred in her family. Her youngest sister was carrying an unborn child and was shot by a teenager, and his reasoning behind the action was, “see what it would feel like to shoot someone (2).” Jenkins creates agony between her and the reader about this gruesome situation.…

Adolescent violence is up, “according to the National Center for Juvenile Justice, the number of arrests for violent crime among those under age 18 rose 47 percent” (Wartik 76). To many, it would be inexcusable to not hold the party responsible accountable. I do understand that if you do a crime, you should do the time, however doing the time is not beneficial to young kids. As previously expressed, there are many other options than sentencing kids to prisons that are beneficial to society. Additionally, kids will still be sentenced for their crimes and held responsible for their actions, but not to the extent as…

Children are usually seen as innocent, as they play around with others and are just balls of energy. Often seen as simply kids who have no experience in the outside world until they grow older. However, sometimes a child’s play can go wrong and can affect another’s life. When these incidents happen where a death is involved, it’s often easy for society to look at the offender as a murder who should be in prison for the rest of their life despite what age the offender may be. While juveniles committing heinous crimes should be punished, they should also be given the chance to rejoin society at an appropriate age; therefore juveniles who redeem themselves should be able to get released earlier and be able to put their life together.…

On the age accountability, Heft said that they are not old enough to be responsible for their actions. They are still viewed as children under the law and by the American society that they live in. While Smith argues that it is very unrealistic to assume that all persons that belong in a certain age group share the same degree of immaturity. The maturity is a factor that varies from individual to individual so they have to be treated like adults and be responsible for their violent actions. Heft and Smith’s points are realistic and well developed but leave the reader in the middle on this situation as undecided on the matter.…

The craziness about this is the saying “the punishment should fit the crime” is like saying the murder should be murdered, and the rapist should be raped. What benefit is there in killing children, saving the taxpayer money or obtain revenge there has to be a better means for criminal justice agencies in the handling of young offenders. Placing juveniles in prison with adult criminals only creates criminals, because the juvenile would then learn how to survive within the surroundings of the adult population Instead, there is a chance youth offenders are of ages 12 to 16 placed in rehabilitation for a chance to develop as productive adults. More than likely juveniles have gone through life in a poor environment, abusive home, or have been neglected they could even lack in education. Some candidates pass through the justice system, most often placed on parole or…

The media initiated fear within the community, therefore stirring the pot for moral panics to take hold of the system. Juvenile crime rates were on the decline as data shows “over the past two decades, from nearly 200 victimizations per 1,000 students in 1992 to fewer than 50 victimizations per 1,000 students in 2011” (Curtis 2014). However, the media covered multiple stories of the violent youthful predator through portrayals of school shootings (Fowler 2011). Legislators, parents, and citizens were disheartened with the level of violence portrayed in the media.…

There have been many opinions on juveniles being convicted as adults on the crimes they have committed. When it comes to some of these harsh crimes, who could not punish the individual to the fullest? It does not matter how old a person is because everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. If someone is raised differently and believes it is okay to murder another human, than they cannot just change their mindset. An individual that makes and adult decision should have the same consequences.…

Good morning. Society is faced with an increasingly growing problem. The problem is that children and teens are committing heinous crimes at a young age. The question is, do we sentence these children and teens to incarceration for the rest of their lives, or do we instead try to rehabilitate these teens and children and find the root causes of these problems? Do we not give them a second chance and let them rot in prison, or do we rehabilitate them and help them become important members of society?…

The United States must reform its laws when it comes to crime, as of now people are only being hurt, with juveniles taking the brunt of that harm. One major law in need of reform is the law pertaining to felony murder. This charge is responsible for putting thousands of youths into prison for decades or even for their entire lives. Those youths charged with felony murder include those “who did no harm, possessed no weapon and did not intend to hurt anyone.” (New York Daily News).…

As we have relevant systems to discipline teenagers who commit crimes it seems unfair for them not to take responsibility for their actions. It seems absurd that someone can commit a violent crime such as murder and not be punished due to the fact they are a teenager. If you are old enough to commit a crime you are old enough to take the punishment which comes along with it and as we already have a justice system in place which takes age into account, there is reason as to why teenagers should not be held responsible for their crimes. There are a variety of differences between the juvenile justice system and the criminal justice system, one of the main ones being that teenagers on trial are not looked at as having committed a crime, they are…

Juveniles should not be tried as adults for it is wrong to hold adolescents, under the legal age, to adult standards. If children do not even receive the same rights as adults in the first place, it makes no sense to try them in adult court. These juveniles should have the opportunity to be rehabilitated in a positive manner, for they tend to come from troubled households and violent neighborhoods. In over half of the cases these troubled kids don’t know any different way than a life of crime when surrounded by both social and environmental factors that influence their delinquent actions. One must commemorate that juveniles are mentally underdeveloped, and still have time to innovate if their issues are dealt with precisely and accurately.…
