Society dictates an individual’s competence based on various characteristics they posses and exhibit. These characteristics are what allow for an individual to set themselves apart from others. Overall, one’s civility, work ethic, conduct, and time management skills offer an excellent measure of ones merit in the professional setting, educational setting and everyday life.

The way we treat one another is an important part of the type of person we are perceived to be. It is also a great way to measure ones self and the quality of life they live. One’s personal code of conduct is they way one carries themselves based on a set of rules they subscribe to. With that in mind, it is important to point out that various institutions provide codes of conduct that can serve as a great base to build upon. The University of Houston’s Student Handbook offers various expectations, which are applicable to any situation. One example of this is the code of being courteous and considerate to the staff and students. This is an important rule that can range from turning your phone off to refraining from eating while someone is talking or giving a presentation. Another code from the University of Houston Handbook that is applicable to everyone is being punctual. This requires an individual to be on time and being attentive throughout a class, meeting or discussion while being mindful not to leave these events early. The Bauer Code of conduct also has an important code that states students should be dressed in appropriate attire. This is something that is important in the professional world and in public as ones image is a reflection on ones self as well. Finally, one code that everyone should follow is the code of honesty. An individual could have all the traits describe above but without proper time management noting would be done in a timely manner. This of course can be a big issue and can be fixed with time management skills. It is said that reasons for bad time management are poor planning, procrastination, and interruptions (Hearn 2015). With this in mind, one must start planning out the various tasks and goals that need to be achieved with an understanding that emergencies may come up. Adding to this, it is also important to try to finish tasks as soon as possible as waiting can lead to various issues like emergencies getting in the way. Finally it is important to keep focus at the tasks at hand and avoid side projects or events that may slow down progress. If one manages their time properly, they will be able to finish their work in a timely manner and still have time for anything else that may come up which shows others that you are
