Popular Mechanics is a short story written by Raymond Carver. It is about two couples having some marital issues. The story begins by saying the husband was leaving the wife. There was a miscommunication, conflict, throughout the whole relationship. The author uses symbolism, plot, characters and theme in the short story.
The author uses a lot of symbolism throughout the whole story. Carver uses symbolism in the beginning of the story. He states:’’ Early that day the weather turned, and the snow was melting into dirty water.” Snow is white that means in literature it means clean pure, stating that the couple was once in a loving pure relationship that has been failing in some way. He uses symbol when the couple start fighting over the baby. The baby was symbolized innocence in the story. In line 26, The baby was red-faced and screaming. In the Scuffle they knocked down a flower pot that hung behind the stove”. (Raymond). It is explained that the flowerpot

It is a couple having some relationship problems. The author shows obscurity to tell the situation of the married couple. “he was in the bedroom pushing clothes into a suitcase when she came to the door.” States the author that the husband is getting ready leaving the wife, that forcing them to fight. The husband was ready to leave asking the wife to give him the baby. Consequently. The couple staring to arguing, the wife does not want to give the baby. They starting to pull the baby arms. “The Baby was red faced”, the baby start crying as they are holding the baby apparently they harm the baby arm, like in the last line the author writes: ’He felt the baby slipping out of his hands and he pulled back very hard. “The story said that the issue was decided, it didn’t state who got the baby but as the last line states people can tell that it was the husband, or they may have been killed the baby. It feels like the baby was the cause of the couple relationship
