Values and Socialization Reflection

Throughout my life I have been shaped by the agents of socialization around me, and as a result I have developed specific values and beliefs that are a reflection of my environment. My education, childhood friends, family, and even the media I was exposed to as a child have all had an effect on these values. The person I am today is a product of these agents of socialization, and the values I have developed as a result dictate my decision making today.

Often I find it difficult to describe myself, however, I do have certain qualities that are easier to point out. I am artistic, an introvert, and somewhat of a daydreamer. I believe that I am intelligent, but often the topics I am knowledgeable about are

I find that I agree with democratic thinking, and my values often align with the liberal philosophy of liberty and equality. I believe that my values have been shaped by many different agents of socialization, such as the ones discussed in the textbook (Ballantine and Roberts 125). The formal agents of socialization that have shaped me are my immediate family, my experiences being homeschooled, and the Catholic Church I grew up in. However, I had a very rough time freshman year while going to this public school, and so I left at the end of the year and continued being homeschooled through high school. I believe that my negative experience freshman year had a major impact on my sense of self, and my confidence. I believe my family is the agent of socialization that has shaped my values the most. Because I grew up with many siblings in a small house, I have learned to value patience, forgiveness, and the importance of …show more content…
All of my values have stayed the same, and I have fortunately never had them challenged by anyone at the college. Berea has socialized me in many ways. I have developed stronger friendships here than I have been able to in the past. My experiences here have been very different from all the other forms of schooling I’ve had, and because of this drastic change of pace it has been difficult for me to adjust socially, however I feel that this semester I have the opportunity to socialize even

Upon this happening, I caught the interest of someone whom I had liked since we were kids. Patrick Hodges and I dated throughout my freshmen year and sophomore year. I have two older siblings who both went off to college before I even went to middle school. This caused me to be raised almost like an only child, but I am still very close to my siblings. Various camps and activities I’ve done over the summer have prepared me for my future as well as for dealing with my current situation.…

Minorities internalize societal stereotypes just as any individual, but role models can serve as a positive influence for minority students to learn and understand ways to overcome the obstacles set before them. As I look toward Bandura’s Modeling Theory, I also consider its applicability to the number of children of clergy who become clergy themselves. This theory would support the idea that as the children grew up and learned the practice of their clergy parents, then leading them to pursue the same career. I can recall many times watching both of my parents engage with the communities that they worked in and even participating in ministry with them so much that it did become my own behaviors. I believe that this can be applicable to any career trend that persons may find through their genograms, because if they were modeling after their families career choices, those career choices eventually would become their…
