Socialize: Mix socially with others; make someone behave in a way that is acceptable to their society; organize according to the principles of socialism (Wikipedia). The questions presented are whether or not socialization impacts the goals and life outcomes of people, how it can influence someone, how do people overcome negative socialization, why do some never conform to social norms, and lastly, do social institutions matter. A few tips would be to break off destructive relationships, make new friends, find a community that shares similar values and beliefs as you, or as Dr. Jan Mark Burte would suggest for children who have social issues would be an after school enrichment program. His program, “The Children’s Socialization Program” helps kids overcome low self-esteem issues, under par social competence, isolation and withdraw problems, and difficulties with relationships. Yes, very much so. Family, friends, media, and school are the top four institutions that sociologists look at. For most, family is the primary source of socialization. Parents are responsible for teaching their children language, how to behave, instilling the values they want their kids to have, and providing the proper resources for success. Friends equal peer pressure. But they’re not all bad. They help others connect, they give advice, and they share common interests which help people grow to know what they like and don’t like. The media is probably the most influential now-a-days. Mass media can promote horrible habits and new social norms that destroy the positive aspects of society. People are constantly on social media websites where negativity spreads like cancer and where “problem children” lurk. Finally, school.
