According to Berger and Luckmann, “primary socialization is the first socialization an individual undergoes in childhood, through which he becomes a member of society” (p.130). Primary socializations is basically the socialization one receives from their parents once they are born. It is explained that everyone is born into an objective social structure where their significant others (parents) are in charge of the socialization that the individual receives. Berger and Luckmann (1966) continue to explain the role of the significant other: Their definitions of his situation are posited for him as objective reality. He is thus born into not only an objective social structure but also an objective social world. The significant others who mediate this world to him modify it in the course of mediating it. They select aspect of it in accordance with their own location in the social structure, and also by virtue of their individual, biographically rooted idiosyncrasies.

Essentially, individuals gain everything from their parents and that includes view on gender roles and equality. Viewing this concept with gender equality in mind, it can really cause positive outcomes for the HeForShe movement. Internalization is defined as “the immediate apprehension or interpretation of an objective event as expressing meaning, that is , as a manifestation of another’s subjective processes which thereby becomes subjectively meaning to myself” (Berger and Luckmann, 1966).
