In order to have a well ran residential center, it must consist of staff members who are dedicated to help improve the wellbeing of the children. The quality of the staff is important, they all play an important role in accommodating the children's need and their improvement. The staffs goal is to provide clinical services in a community-based therapeutic setting for youth who present severe and persistent challenges in social, emotional, behavioral, or psychiatric functioning. The duties for the staff are comprised in three departments; residential, educational, and clinical. Social workers are apart of the clinical department of a residential treatment center. Staff in the clinical department have a common role, they are here to get a better understanding of the child.
The role of a social worker in a residential treatment center is vital, they provide a wide range of services to help patients and ensure the smooth operation of the center. Social workers arrange home visits, see families, and keep in touch with all staff to monitor the children's progress. Children who are placed have dealt with abuse and injustice throughout their lives and the very thing they need most is consistency. Having a child deal with different practice throughout the day from different caregivers may remind them of their home setting, which is not well for them. Poor communication and inconsistent practice can be frustrating and unsafe for the children, Consistency requires good communication and adequate training. When issues like inconsistent practices come along, social workers and staff from all departments should come together and discuss the problems and come up with set practices that can accommodate to different types of children
