Social Work Process Analysis

Social workers fill a vital role in today’s world. The United States has made great strides in creating programs and making laws to protect, support, and encourage those in need, however, those alone would not be enough, without professionals that are educated, trained, and driven to help people effectively. Building a relationship with the client is paramount, therefore, the ability to show you care, while remaining professional is key to successfully helping the client. The diagnosis is crucial in determining what assistance the client is in need of. The client could be in need of emotional or mental health support, or they may need help because of extreme poverty. It could be that the client needs help to escape from an abusive situation, or an elderly or disabled client may be in need of living assistance. The client may also be a recently released prisoner that may need help readjusting to life outside of prison. This can sometimes be a pivotal moment for the client, and must be handled delicately by the social worker. During this step in the process, a social worker is able to make the client aware of what avenues of assistance they qualify for, and what changes they may need to make in order to resolve their crisis. They may have to broach the subject of a client’s addiction, or speak openly about situations that are painful for the client. It is during this phase of the process that a social worker and the client should come to an agreement on how to proceed, by creating a figurative contract between them. The client agrees to adhere to the recommendations the social worker has made. Those changes might include, but are not limited to; stopping an unhealthy behavior, seeing a therapist, or leaving a situation that is detrimental to them. The social worker agrees to continue to monitor the client while encouraging, and assisting them in a professional capacity, and to continuously provide support, and help to access any and all avenues of assistance conducive to the client’s
