I have learned that I can never assume things about a person or situation. I also learned that I should do research on my clients background and try to gain understanding about what goes on in their lives and why they react the way they do. One major mistake the social worker made was over stepping her professional boundaries. This in particular showed me that I have to be always mindful of agency policy, and not get too attached to a client. Faith Harper’s story gave great insight into social work practice, and I will attempt to go above and beyond to help all women in Faith’s…
Compassion Fatigue and Verghese Compassion fatigue is a growing result of working in the medical profession. The definition of compassion fatigue is the cumulative physical, emotional and psychological effect of exposure to traumatic stories or events when working in a helping capacity, combined with the strain and stress of everyday life (American Bar Association). Health physicians, especially those working with terminally ill patients, often become compassionately fatigued from the deaths and critical conditions of their patients. In his book, My Own Country, Dr. Abraham Verghese shares the reality of compassion fatigue as an AIDS specialist.…
Compassion Fatigue has been of increasing interest for healthcare institutions for many years (Stamm, 2002). The interest on this topic has grown over the past decade due to the correlation that has been identified and supported between burnout and increased turnover among healthcare workers (Jenkins & Baird, S., 2002). A 2009 study identified that nurses with high levels of Compassion Fatigue also have high levels of Burnout (Hooper, Craig, Janvrin, Wetsel & Reimels, 2009). Additionally, for every nurse that vacates their position, the estimated cost to replace their position ranges from $22,000 to $64,000 (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2009).…
Theoretical construct Based upon analysis of previous research, it is evident that research into compassion is less prevalent than compassion fatigue (Kagen, 2014). According to Gilbert (2005), compassion can be divided into two parts: 1) a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune and 2) a strong desire to help stop the suffering. The desire to help stop the suffering is what separates compassion from empathy. A plethora of research has identified that compassion is reduced when a person is continuously exposed to compassion inducing stimuli, known as compassion fatigue (Conrada & Kellar-Guentherb, 2006).…
Exploring the Experience of Compassion Fatigue Among Nurses Nurses pride themselves on being able to bring compassionate care to patients and their families. During their care for ill and injured patients, nurses witness intense levels of tragedy. When nurses are unable to relieve the stresses brought on by their accumulating suppressed grief, they can reach a breaking point which is referred to as compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is defined as a combination of physical, emotional, and spiritual depletion associated with caring for patients in significant emotional pain and physical distress (Houck, 2013; Schroeter, 2014).…
Compassion fatigue, the reduction of empathy, can affect many people in a variety of fields. The majority of these fields, including medicine, involve traumatic experiences, which can lead to compassion fatigue. One field that has not been studied and researched as much as some fields is law enforcement. Some studies have looked at how compassion fatigue affects law enforcement’s likelihood of violence, and some have researched police officers who work with rape victims. In general, compassion fatigue has an effect on police officers regardless of who they work with.…
A Social Worker’s Key To Motivation The questions revolving around the motivations behind human behavior have been pondered and theorized by scholars living across boarders, cultures, and even time periods; despite that, many questions still remain. It is probable that almost everyone, if not everyone, can say that they have come in contact with someone, at least once, who seems to have little motivation to do anything more than sit around. Vice versa, it is also probable that everyone can say that they have come across someone who seems to never stop working towards achieving the goals that he/she has set for himself/herself. The differences between the person who seems to lack motivation altogether and the person who seems to have an abundance…
When faced with a strenuous period in life, people develop coping mechanisms. However, some mechanisms can be disastrous such as drinking. Compassion fatigue is no exception with substance abuse being one of its behavioral signs. Substance abuse is “well known to …have a negative effect on their family” (www.drugs.ie), and robs the ability of the provider to relate with family. The effects of compassion fatigue on health care professionals is a natural response to witnessing repeated trauma over a lifetime.…
1. Explain why the compassion gap is problematic. From your perspective, what needs to happen to eliminate the compassion gap? There are a plethora of laws in effect that state one cannot be discriminated against for various reasons.…
A quote I like to remind myself of when I feel overwhelmed comes from a personal wellness training session I attended, which states that “it is not selfish to refill your own cup so that you can pour into others. It is not just a luxury, it is essential.” As a social worker, the ability to self-reflect and take care of yourself before taking care of others is a critical skill for competent practice in this…
Literature Review Compassion fatigue strongly impacts nurses as well as patients throughout healthcare. Awareness is essential among compassion fatigue not only emphasizes the reality of burnout, increased unnecessary stress, negative work environments, lack of leadership support, nursing retention problems, reduced patient satisfaction scores, and financial contingencies specifically patient reimbursements (Kelly, 2015; Hunsaker, 2015; Sacco, 2015; Lachman, 2016). However, positive resolutions have been established to improve nursing recognition specifically, the “daisy award (Diseases Attacking the Immune System)” within nursing practice in recognizing exceptional nurses who demonstrate admirable quality patient care, as well as “Magnet hospitals” known for highly respected nursing practice (Kelly, Runge, & Spencer, 2015, p.524,526). Our future as professionals brings an imperative opportunity in utilizing nursing science, knowledge, research, and apply nursing as well as patient feedback in preventing compassion fatigue.…
Many social workers reach a point in their career in which they become “burnout.” During this phase social workers are overwhelmed with the caseloads assigned to them resulting in stress, anxiety, depression and self-neglect. A social worker needs to realize this problem and engage in self-care to help them deal with the stressor of their employment. It is better to be straightforward and not keep a child in suspense. Andy quickly learned not to develop a trusting relationship with any social worker.…
According to the Dalai Lama (2001), mindfulness can enhance presence in four ways. First, it can heighten the sustainability of focused attention. Second, mindfulness practice can enhance self-compassion which should lead to greater empathy and compassion with clients. The compassion and acceptance developed in mindfulness practice is viewed as ultimately valuable as the basis of compassion and acceptance toward others (Dalai Lama, 2001). Third, mindfulness can offer a way to reduce stress and enhance well-being and care for one’s own self.…
Ethical Issues When Social Workers Specialize in Addictions Social workers that specialize in addictions can face many ethical issues while trying to help their client achieve sobriety. A social worker needs to focus on human relations, trust building, allowing the client to make independent decisions, and to show an acceptance and respect for the client regardless of the situation. One ethical issue is if a woman is seeking help for substance abuse and she discloses that she is pregnant.…
Often, they chose not to. I realized that I could not solve their problems, I could only be ready with a helping hand for them to chose to receive help. Social workers experience mental and physical exhaustion as they deal with difficult situations, but they can see small glimpses of success when clients choose to help…
