Reflection On The Dynamic Between Social Work And Criminology

Improved Essays
At the beginning of the 2016 fall semester, I did not know what the field of social work was all about. I originally thought that all social workers are the same and they all do the same types of jobs. Now I know that there are many different types of social workers and they all have different types of cases they take care of. I did not know that social workers were needed for people over the age of 18, therefore, I found all of the different kinds of social work careers to be very interesting. After being in this course, I came to find that the dynamic between social work and criminology is very interesting. The way that social workers and criminal justice workers have to work together despite their views is an interesting dynamic. I also …show more content…
I never had any idea that there were social workers that helped people suffering from addictions. It is very impressive that social workers can do so much for these people and their families. I think this is a reason that the field of social work needs to continue to grow and that social work needs to be a more common major and colleges and universities. Many topics that were discussed in this class have greatly impacted me. For example, the article about food deserts that I did my second article review on, made me think on the problems that people face living in a country like the United States. Many middle to lower class people in the U.S. go hungry because they do not have affordable grocery stores near them. This is not a problem that I would have never thought about, but this class has opened my eyes to the problems other types of people …show more content…
I struggle with providing sympathy and empathy to others, I think this is a large part of being able to work as a social worker, therefore, I should not choose that profession. I also lack the appropriate people skills for a profession such as social work. Instead of social work, I would like to pursue a career in urban planning because I want to make a difference in the community that I live in. I am a very open person regarding to other people’s beliefs and decisions, I believe this would be the only quality that would make me a successful social worker. One value that I have always held, is that all people deserve opportunities until they have proven otherwise and I will continue to hold that value as I continue into my

This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…

The social work profession is to infuse change into the lives of individuals and into the community to reduce or eradicate the ill effects of personal distress and social inequality (Cox, Long, & Tice, 2016). Social workers are constantly working on brooding their horizons, by learning on the job or continuing education. Social work has seven values, some of which are grouped together, “dignity and worth of person, competence, importance of human relationships, integrity, human services, and social justice” (Code of Ethics, 2011). In the 2016 election Trump promised to deport all “illegals,” many to a country that they have never seen.…

Introduction When I first decided to pursue a degree in social work, my decision was guided by the experience I had volunteering specifically with children. Specifically, I learned there are three broad practice categories: micro, mezzo, and macro social work from which I can choose.…
