Becoming a social worker can be very gratifying; I felt this satisfaction when I was an intern at Eggleston Family Services, a foster care and adoption agency. One of the foster parents assigned to my caseload was going to submit a two-week notice to transfer a foster child to a different placement. I was in disbelief that a foster parent would easily abandon a minor just because the child did not want to complete their chores. The foster parent only saw the child’s flaws and setbacks. I sat down with the foster parent and explained that the minor has many good qualities and attributes. She is very intelligent performing well academically. During my service I got the opportunity to go oversee to Afghanistan. Part of our mission was to conduct humanitarian aid to the civilian in the region. Providing food, water and other supplies to the families was fulfilling. I realized I wanted to pursue a profession that would allow me to serve people in need. When I had just returned from my combat deployment, I had a difficult time adjusting back into civilian life. I was stubborn and refused any help from professionals. It was until my wife pleaded with me to talk to a therapist about the trauma I experienced in combat that I decided to make an effort to search for help. I agreed to see a therapist at the Veterans Affair. Before I was able to see a therapist, I was advised to see a social worker. The social worker who was a veteran, notified me of all the services I qualified for including: medical care, education benefits, home loans, vocational rehabilitation and counseling services. Meeting this social worker was a life changing experience because she helped get the benefits I deserved for serving my country. The social worker helped me apply for medical care and education benefits. It is because of the assistance I received that I decided to pursue my education and determined my career as a social work. I would like to carry on the legacy of a social worker and help out veterans that need
