The Client
The client group is struggling with Tyler’s bipolar disorder. Since the meeting, he has not sought out help to benefit him and his family through treatment. His bipolar disorder is affecting his wife, his mother, and his daughter. Since his daughter is often with his mother, the social worker asked if Morgan had been acting herself through all of this. She started the meeting off by talking about confidentiality, then went into everyone’s goals. She provided an assessment tool that would help her and the family identify when goals would be completed (Dunst, Trivette & Deal, 1998). In Tyler’s case, she asked him how job searching was going. He said he hadn’t got started. She asked him what would be an acceptable goal for completing that goal for next week. He said he wanted to complete two job applications. This allowed for the social worker to dig deeper through those surface issues and find out what is really going on why Tyler has not completed anything from the first meeting. Tyler then mentioned, he does not have internet access at home to access the websites the social worker was talking about. He then mentioned, they also no longer have a vehicle for transportation. The social worker would not have known these issues without the clients feeling comfortable enough to share them. The social worker would have wondered why Tyler had not completed his goals the next week without knowing those important bits of information. She helped resolve this problem by having the family set up a time to travel to the library, as well as offering them assistance through the agency with a monthly bus
