Due to the majority of the referrals coming from the state, her clients cross many cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.Youth and families are referred to Choices in different ways, but most referrals are made through our partners. We partner directly with state Medicaid programs, foster care programs, social services department, counties, schools, and managed care entities. Felicia stated she has contributed her success with working with these people due to her desire to be culturally component. “Cultural competence is a capacity that enables professionals and organizations to work effectively in cross-cultural situations. It has been adopted in fields such as health, social work, psychology, education and information”( Blackburn, 2015, p). The social worker must be aware of other cultures, beliefs, and feelings.
When asked about what she does at Choices, Felicia’s main role is to help families identify strengths and needs to develop plans, partner with families to build a team of community supports and services;help families track their progress;stay in regular contact with youth and families with face-to-face meetings and phone calls;provide crisis support; and educate, empower, and encourage youth and caregivers. Felicia stated the agency utilized both the strength perspective and system theory with their clients.“The system focus on the connections between, and the resources of families and groups, and on helping those connections to work well” (Payne, 2010, p.185). It is premised on the idea that an effective system is based on individual needs, rewards, expectations, and attributes of the people living in the system. According to this theory, families, couples, and organization members are directly involved in resolving a problem even if it is an individual issue. “System theory benefits, social work because it incorporates social factors as well as psychological functioning into people’s lives, balancing the two most important elements of social work aims.
