Social Worker Practice Felicia works at Choices in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Choices are We are a national non-profit organization committed to supporting youth with significant behavioral and emotional challenges in community settings by using evidence-informed methods that build on the strengths of everyone involved.Felicia is a social worker at the agency. Due to the majority of the referrals coming from the state, her clients cross many cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.Youth and families are referred to Choices in different ways, but most referrals are made through our partners. We partner directly with state Medicaid programs, foster care programs, social services department, counties, schools, and managed care entities. Felicia stated she has contributed her success with working with these people due to her desire to be culturally component. “Cultural competence is a capacity that enables professionals and organizations to work effectively in cross-cultural situations. The family was referred by the school because the 10-year old little girl is acting out. The mother is deaf and has a hard time communicating with anybody. This family does not have a car and the mother babysits other children in the community. The school was threatening to expel the little girl if she did have her medication adjusted. Felicia accompanied the family to the doctor 's appointment because the mother was being treated unfairly. The mother requested an interpret and they fail to provide her one. The receptionist was very rude and condescending towards her. Felicia spoke with her supervisor and then made a report to management of the office
