Social Worker Narrative

Totally confused, I walked through the doors of the Meridian Behavioral Healthcare overwhelmed with anxiety and uncertainty. The orientation time was never communicated; therefore, there was no time set for arrival. Arriving at 8:00am, I waited patiently for instruction. After a couple hours of waiting, the treatment specialist escorted the intern students to an office to wait for the arrival of the Recovery Supervisor. It is clear the organization was not prepared for the internship. It has been several days, and there is no clear direction of what the responsibilities and expectations of an intern consist of. I have become concerned about whether or not the placement is going to be valuable in preparing for a career in social worker.

My role as a social worker would have been to help the family as much as I can get through the complications they faced. I would offer services like educating them about informed consent, provide crisis counseling, and I would try to get every member of the Lacks family the free health insurance they obviously deserve. In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…

During my fifth week doing my internship at Department of labor of Veterans’ Employment Training Service (VETS), I was happy because, for me it is important when your bosses recognize your effort and tell you that you did a good job. The action of recognizing my good job makes me more motivate and also to feel good about the organization. During this opportunity to do this internship, I am taking experience of the things I do right but also the things that I have done wrong. I should not feel bad if I make a mistake because with the things that I do wrong I am going to try to not make the same mistake on the workforce.…

It is very upsetting to see people taken advantage of because they are in a desperate situation. I am employed by a social services agency and I try to ensure that my clients are not being taken advantage by other agencies, employers, or family members. I feel that a good social worker is always advocating for the best interest and well-being of their clients. If it would not have been for social worker and epidemiologist, Peter Buxtun’s persistence and finally going to the media in 1972, would this still be going on? Field placement was what I looked forward to the most about entering my Senior Year of the Bachelor of Social Work program. I was enthusiastic to apply my classroom learning into direct practice out in the field. I have always been intrigued in working with at risk youth and finding ways to help them develop into the best version of themselves despite the injustices they have endured. Although, I was cognizant of the multitude of issues that impacts at risk youth I never specifically focused on youth homelessness. Therefore, I was astonished when I discovered that my field placement interview was scheduled at the Covenant House which is a homeless youth shelter in Detroit.…

This leads to another aspect of my professional practice, which is engagement. Even though I may not have a lot of experiences working as a social worker, I can use that to my advantage where I can come in with an open mind to new ideas and even more positive outlook. I find that sometimes social workers or any other helping professionals who have been in the field for a long time tend to stick to the same practices and mindset that can negatively impact clients. For me, I would engage with my clients in open discussions regarding topics like what they are going through, what they like to change, future goals and so forth. By doing this, it helps motivate them to take action in their own life and have a final say without having to rely on a…
