My motivation for my MSW degree goes all the way back to my teen years. I have always made myself available to help someone else by learning all I can, which if someone did not know how to get something done, and they knew that they could call on me. At the time, I did not know the name for being place to heed someone’s call until my adulthood. My family has always referred to an act of kindness as being a missionary worker, but I had to tell them that there is another name for the work that I do and it is called a social worker. Life has been an inspiration for me to become all I can be not only for myself, but for others as well. I worked as a patient representative, an unlicensed social worker for a local hospital (North Mississippi Medical Center). The focus for this position was to help individuals who come into the hospital for any assistants other than to see the doctor. Sometimes I had to find overnight shelter for the homeless, find funds for medications when patients could afford their medicines. I helped patients with transportation when a family or friend could not pick them up after their visit. The most trying time about this position was I try to console those who had lost their love ones. I had find family for those who lost their cell phones during a car accident and they could not remember their families’ number to call them about their whereabouts. I have worked in the NICU of a women’s hospital, but of the same branch of North Mississippi Medical Center. This was hospitals that provided care for critical newborn babies. I took care of families that came into the NICU by making sure the families had everything that needed, so they could be there for their babies.
