Roene explained that she came to be a social worker as a roundabout path. She was a nurse for about ten years. In those ten years she realized that nursing was not too much about healing people, but managing symptoms and curing physical ailments. She encountered many patients who were mentally ill, but nurses were not properly trained on how to deal with patients with mental problems. This led her to start looking around for what may actually help people heal. While studying what to do next, she stumbled upon some scientific research about the brain. After analyzing the data, she came to believe that our minds have about ninety-eight percent control of our bodies and processes.
