My social work goals coincide with my values and beliefs because I hold them near and dear to my heart, and hope to always portray to other the way I wish to be treated. Empathy can help me to relate and connect with my clients and if I were ever in their shoes I would appreciate if they were to do the same for me. Communication is vital in the field of social work and in my life because without it, nothing would get accomplished. E-mailing, phoning, texting, writing and face to face communication is how social workers interact with their clients from all lifestyles and backgrounds. My goal of open and constant communication is useful in the field because social workers need to be able to employ strong communication skills to help people feel comfortable around them and having those strong skills will only make it easier for people to approach me.…

We hardly think of the things that we naturally get, and so it is these things that we often disregard when trying to figure out what is truly the issue for clients. We look to the issues and troubles that they have, when we should be looking to underlying things that make people who they are. Leonardson describes in his Empowerment in Social Work: an Individual vs. a Relational Perspective that empowerment is not something we can easily promote in others; it works purely on the individual level, and all social workers can do is introduce it to their clients. He points out that “…in Western cultures, the idea of autonomy and self-reliance as basic values in a society seem to be broadly accepted” (Leonardsen, 4) which is something social workers need to account for in their work with others. In our individualistic culture, everyone is for themselves, so all a worker can hope for is for their clients to choose to…

In this case the personal practice model I feel I gravitate more towards is radical practice. In life I have always thought no matter what I am faced with I will acknowledge and act to achieve. Having an open mind, setting your biases aside, listening and helping with an open heart I believe is the key to social and individual change (ppt.4slide29). When and if working in future practice relationships I personally like to position myself beside clients and service users, as this allows them to have a sense of control over their decisions.…

As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…
