Introduction
As a social worker, there is a limitless amount of possibilities when choosing a career to pursue in. One can select a field to practice in based on an interest or their own personal experience. For example, a social worker could have had experience dealing with her grandmother who needed help socially and psychologically. With a desire to accommodate the elderly who obtain problems similar to her grandmother, she could be interested in the field of practice of the elderly and become a gerontological social worker. Furthermore, a social worker in this field can be located in either public elementary or secondary schools, governmental organizations, residential care facilities, adoption agencies, or additional social service agencies ("Child, Family, and School Social Workers," n.d.). Amongst the range of various settings, there is also a range of areas a children and youth social worker can specialize in. The basic areas involve administration, supervision, education, advocacy, direct practice, research, program development and evaluation, and policy (National Association of Social Workers, n.d.). According to National Health Service Careers, social workers that take part in children and youth services should contribute several types of assistance, advice, and support in various settings such as homes, foster and adoption agencies, or schools ("Social Worker," n.d.). These roles allow the social worker to interact with the child, additionally being able to resolve any issues and problems a child has experienced. Another essential role that social workers must play is to develop the function of children socially and psychologically by increasing the academic functioning of the individual ("Understanding the Role of a Social Worker," n.d.). In addition to modifying these aspects of a child, the social worker will also be able to enhance the child 's well-being.
