Personal Reflection: Social Work With Special Populations

Improved Essays
This course, Social Work with Special Populations, provided me with an excellent opportunity to grow in my journey of becoming a culturally competent social worker. Each assignment, whether it was in class or at home, had its own impact. For example, the in-class videos we were shown and the discussions we had provided me with visuals and real-life examples of the challenges individuals from other cultures face. Additionally, learning about the curative factors and existential elements was very helpful as well. I work best when I’m provided with step-by-step guidelines and I feel as if I will benefit by using the existential approach in my career as a social worker. These two assignments we had over the course of the semester have been very …show more content…
Before completing this assignment, I had a difficult time immersing myself with people who were different than me solely because I had a hard time being comfortable with being uncomfortable. I also wasn’t aware of the biases I held toward particular groups. This assignment allowed me to become more conscious of these biases and encouraged me to create a plan of action so that I can work to overcome them. In addition, it gave me the opportunity to interview an individual from a culture that I’m not comfortable with. After interviewing Shel Boas from the Yellow Deli, I discovered that all the biases I held toward her culture came from stereotypes and other things I’ve heard about it. This project showed me how powerful a simple conversation can be. After completing the cultural awareness immersion assignment, I discovered the beauty of learning about cultures that differ from my own. I’m thankful that this course provided me with this …show more content…
My group and I were responsible for covering material from the elderly adults’ chapter. I didn’t realize how many challenges older adults face. For example, I learned that 1 out of 6 of all elderly adults have been abused or neglected. In addition, this presentation gave me the opportunity to work in a group setting. As a social worker, no matter what area of the profession you choose, you will consistently work with other people of all different races, genders, and ethnicities. Thus, this assignment provided me with excellent practice for the future. Finally, the group chapter presentation gave me the chance to present in front of our class. I’ve always been terrified of public speaking, but I know, as an aspiring social worker, I may be called to testify in court. So, it is good to get as much practice as possible. Overall, the group chapter presentation helped me grow in my journey of becoming a social worker. The critical thinking activity is another assignment I found to be very helpful. Like the chapter presentation, it gave me the opportunity to work in a group setting. In addition, it allowed me to apply the eight curative factors and the four existential elements to a case scenario. I know I’m going to find these tools applicable in many of the future cases I’m assigned to, so I appreciated the extra practice. It was also helpful

There were articles on critical reflective practices in different populations, such as youth services and hospice care. Another area of social work that critical reflection seemed to be very dominate was education. There were multiple articles found in the Journal of Teaching in Social work, Social Work Education, and Social Work. The five articles found within these three journals discussed the current gaps and challenges within social work academic programs and within the daily practice of social workers (Bay & Macfarlane, 2011; Jensen-Hart & Williams, 2010; Morley & Dunstan, 2013; Savaya & Gardner, 2012; Wiener, 2012). When I started working as a CAN, as well as volunteering in the health care field, I understood that the work involved included helping residents in activities of daily living. What I found out after I started working was how much of an impact the job makes on people. When I was volunteering to help a woman go grocery shopping I did not think much of it. However, when I came into her home and started putting her groceries away she started tearing up. I found out that she and her husband used to always go grocery shopping together and would later play a game that involved putting the groceries away.…

    b. Personally, I think the way social workers providing services should depend on the types of clients we are working with. Working with children is different with working with elderly. Even though both groups demand special care, elderly do not like to be treated as children. Before I started my field placemen at the ELC, I believe that in order to work with children, one should be patient and really love kids. The working experience proved my views were correct.…

During this process, both students accepted the viewpoints, forms, and thinking of the social worker discourse community. Moreover, Davis’s research shows that both students began to see a new socially accepting standpoint a necessity for students who want to help members of economic and socially oppressed groups improve their situations. In fact, both students acknowledge trying to change the world around them, ultimately deciding to adapt to join the discourse community of social work, though it was harder for Stella because of her mindset. In the process of coming to college, the two students were agreeable to making a complete transition to write, solve problems, and adopt a social worker perspective, no matter how alien it was to their native communities, the students found themselves becoming someone…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

To begin, I want to say I find this course insightful. Through the weeks, I have come to accept that everyone has unconscious bias, but also, that it is not something to be ashamed of, if anything, it is something to learn from. Before this class, I was not sure how to articulate my experiences on cultural differences. Also, I did not have a good grasp on culture and how it affects us all differently. I have learned to recognize that I have my own ethnocentrism, that it is okay to feel proud of my own culture in the sense that, maybe there are other ways to do things, but I like my way better because that is the way I am accustomed to.…
