Critical Analysis Paper #1 Question #1: Social Work and Systems Theory Social Work as a concept and a career is simple, yet difficult to define. Social work has grown and developed from the seed that is envelops social issues in our society. As Robbins, Chatterjee, and Canda state in Contemporary Human Behavior Theory (2012), defined situations within society have dictated the need for social work and advocates to speak on behalf of those who are unable to speak for themselves. From the inception of its career, social work has been associated with helping those in need, whether that be at a micro-level with individual therapy and case management, or a macro level with policy development and large scale advocacy efforts.…

I feared negative evaluation, social gatherings and was my own worst nightmare—in a perpetual battle for my peace of mind. “Why am I this way?” I thought; I could not figure it out, but I knew there was more to life than social anxiety. Walking in fear every day, feeling under the spotlight, there had to be a way out. Not being able to function in society, my self-worth shrunk, but what hurt me the most was not being able to express myself.…
To my understandings, generalist social work practice is an academic preoperational tool that introduces students to simplistic social work-related concepts of empowerment and advocacy with and on behalf of the clients served (NASW Code of Ethics p. 5). Additionally, generalist social work practice provides informative structured guidelines with the intention to help social work students obtain the required knowledge and skills needed to work in the human and social services jobs (Shulman P. 89) For example, when establishing a helping relationship, development of trustworthiness and commitment is an important procedure client applies to best determine if the social worker will best meet one’s needs (Harper-Dorton p. 65). To work toward a society that is inclusive of social and biological differences social workers must scrutinize cultural based assumptions and processes. Additionally, for the safety of the professional-client rapport and dynamic, it is imperative that these professionals, not only scrutinize systems and regulations but themselves and their personal value system which governs unconscious actions and assumptions. Additionally, it is even more critical that we become a profession that is politically seasoned, at all levels. Social workers must become leaders in preventative care and preventative interventions. It seems like we are too often intervening during crises and therefore, providing tempory solutions to systemic issues.…

As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…
Based on the way I was raised, chores were divided among all six residents of the house. In all honesty, the chores were divided in an almost gender assigned way. I was in charge of washing dishes and cleaning the table while my older sister dealt with sweeping and mopping of the house. My eldest sister did laundry and cleaned the stove and occasionally helped with outside chores such as raking leaves as my brother mowed the lawn. Chores were done once a week and took at most than three hours, depending on the how messy we were that week.…
