The Charity Organization or COS was the first relief organization to pay its people to investigate requests for assistance and to refer eligible applicants to one or more existing agencies for intensive aid and super vision (2012). One of the women that helped paved the way for social work through the settlement houses, Jane Addams, was known best for establishing settlement houses in Chicago for immigrants in the early 1900s. Addams was a dedicated community organizer and peace activist (Social Work History). Another way of providing community-based services and advocacy for the poor and disenfranchised was the settlement house movement. One of the most influential women in the social work profession was Mary Richmond, who basically formulated the concept of social casework-the method designed to develop personality through adjustments consciously effected between persons and their environment.
