This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…

My values, attitudes, and assumptions have changed slightly over the course of the MSW program. I think that is partly due to my field placement and the coursework of the MSW program. I am currently placed at a home-based counseling agency called Quality Care in Augusta, GA. For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a therapist. I think I seen movies where a client would come into a psychologist’s office and lay down on a red, comfy couch and tell stories from their childhood, which developed them into the person they are today.…
The healthcare system in the United States is facing many changes in the coming years as the population ages. The change in our population has lead to an increase in healthcare costs as more Americans enter the health care system with declining functional performance, mental impairments, and chronic conditions. With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the emphasis on decreasing healthcare expenditures, our healthcare delivery system is shifting to a health and wellness approach. With the changing dynamics, there is an increase in the implementation of interdisciplinary teams for patient care. The shift in healthcare delivery to a focus on population health, community health services, chronic condition management, and mental…
Therapists and first responders are able to deter the effects of disasters on mental health by helping people feel safe. This can be done by creating an environment that provides mental and physical health care, rehabilitation services, comfort, and reassurance. Education and disaster preparedness are also two factors that reduce distress and vulnerability. Woman, children and the elderly become vulnerable in the face of natural disasters, although children are most vulnerable. If these populations were to become more familiar with the effects such disasters can have, they may be able to better respond thus, reducing the amount of lives lost.…

For my critical reflection I will be analyzing a fifteen-minute video role-play I conducted when a young person presented to a mock family support service seeking housing support and information after leaving home due to family violence. As a social work student I will examine in practice if I used anti oppressive skill orientations to support the client’s needs, referencing peer feedback provided by a university student to support my arguments. This reflection will include my areas of improvement that are apparent and conclude with answering if the overall approach of the video role-play was identifiably anti oppressive practice. The practice framework I have developed and incorporated in this video role play strongly reflects my values, beliefs and principles that I consider fundamental to effective social work practice.…

There are no social workers at the facility. However, the warden at the institution has an MSW degree and a background in psychology services. Despite the multiple psychology services offered and various mental health needs, there are very few social workers throughout the entire agency. Most social workers who work for the BOP are employed at what are considered medical institutions. These institutions usually have terminally ill inmates and inmates with significant medical needs.…
REVIEW OF ABRAHAM FLEXNER’S ARTICLE “IS SOCIAL WORK A PROFESSION? ” BY ABRAHAM FLEXNER The paper on “ Is social work a profession?” by Abraham Flexner, which was presented at the Forty Second Annual session of The National Conference on Charities and Correction on May 17th, 1915 at Baltimore, Maryland, is said to be an extended argument about whether social work can be considered a profession or not. Flexner shows us a brief picture of how a profession would be, where he brings in a comparison between a professional and an amateur; he portrays the professional as someone whose entire time is devoted to an activity and the latter who is transiently and provisionally so engaged.…
I have wanted to be a social worker and work with children since I have been twelve years old. My dad grew up in the foster care system and is my inspiration for wanting to be a social worker and work with children who have experienced trauma. My freshman field experience opened my eyes to the many different opportunities and varied fields within the social work profession. Every other Monday throughout the spring semester, my freshman field class visited a different agency. In my field experiences during my junior and senior years, I have had the opportunity to experience social work in a school setting.…
First day of my social work practicum – Today I arrived at the agency as early as 7:40 in the morning. Upon entering I am already looking in speaking with my supervisor and talk about what I will do on my first day. My supervisor is very accommodating, we started our conversation by discussing some matters such as: attendance, tasks, requirements, cases and other personal information. I also assumed that I would get my first case today however, I did not receive any as I still have to learn and familiarize myself to the agency’s protocols and procedures. My supervisor provided me reading material, manual of operation and forms that I would for the case management.…
Understanding of the social work profession To many, the primary mission of the profession of social work is enhancing the needs of those that are considered vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. However, my understanding of the social work profession is helping someone to make positive changes in his or her life that result in a better quality of life. This is also true when promoting the wellbeing of the community in a social context.…
