In Washington D.C, the Department of Health is the entity responsible for the LMSW and LCSW licensing. The Board of Social Work controls the practice of social work in DC, including specializations in the profession. The Board also manages and implements the law. The Board assesses applications and manages exams, recommends standards and measures, and concerns licenses. The Board accepts and reviews grievances; requests investigations; conducts hearings, issues subpoenas, examines witnesses, and administers oaths; and issues an annual report.
In order to embark upon licensure, the prospective licensee will need a master’s in social work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited school. An individual who attains master’s degree in social work can apply to become a licensed graduate social worker. An LISW practices social work independently, however, they must practice clinical social work under supervision. In order to become an LISW, you must have an MSW or doctorate in social work and must had have the lower level social work license for two years prior to applying for the LISW. The additional requirements are completion of 3,000 hours of post-graduate experience in two or four years. Apply to take the ASWB exam through the Washington DC Board of Social Work; costs $230 (as of January 2016).
