The role for social workers in the gap in services for transitioning youth with mental health issues are multifaceted. They include our role as advocates for our clients, advocates for structural, political and organizational change and our role as counsellors. Working together in a team environment, even amongst social workers themselves can be difficult and cause conflict. When you add to the mix of different professionals around a table, even more conflict and issues of ownership can arise. Baker, Egan-Lee, Martimianakis & Reeves (2011) identify individuals felt that socialization through their training affected the way different health professional groups viewed themselves. In general, physicians perceived themselves as “leaders” and “decision makers” in health care while nursing, therapists, and other professionals (i.e. Pharmacists, dieticians, social workers) saw themselves as ‘team members’ who tend to adopt a holistic approach to care.
