I decided I had to go to work, but unfortunately in 2009 the company I was working for had gone out of business. At this point my husband had become disabled. My family and I had to go on housing assistances and food stamps to get by. The next few years were very hard on my family. In 2010 my parents were in an automobile accident, my mother perished, and my father fractured both his legs and he had to live with us for 6 months as I nursed him back to health. I also sit on the boards for the Universal Access, Human’s Relations and Recreation commissions in my town. Volunteerism is an important part of my life.
My whole life I have been the person that strangers come up and start telling me their life story and asking my advice. Being the mother of a child with learning disabilities, I can always tell the students in my classes who are struggling learners and make a point to give them my contact information, so that they have someone to help them. The moment I decided that I wanted to become a social worker, I knew I wanted to be a medical social worker, and work in a hospital setting. This is why I am super excited that my internship is at Southside Hospital. Southside Hospital is a part of the North Shore Long Island Jewish healthcare system, and it has 341 beds.…

During my formative years, I was fortunate enough to have had a mother who chose to treat her seventeen-year battle with cancer as if it were one of life's unique teaching opportunities. I sincerely believe that my passionate interest in mental health and wellness is due in part to the residual effect of spending my youth in and out of doctor's offices, cancer centers, and emergency rooms. Certainly my presence in these settings and role as a primary caretaker allowed me to both witnesses and appreciate the extraordinary skill involved in caring for the well-being of others. As a sensitive youth and vigilant observer, I looked to see how the most empathetic care providers responded to the needs of their clients.…

Throughout my high school career, I became increasingly involved with youth volunteer groups such as Pathways of Central Ohio’s Youth Leadership Council of Licking County (YLC) and Mental Health America of Licking County’s Prevent Assault and Violence Education (P.A.V.E.). Due to my involvement in these groups, my mother recommended that I become a social worker, and after speaking to someone from my church who is a social worker, I am convinced that social work will allow me to utilize the skills I learned in these groups to improve the lives of others. I believe that there are many things that I can bring many things to the social work profession upon graduation. One important skill a social worker should have, especially to be an effective and competent communicator with their clients, is empathy. They should be able to see things as the clients do and help them improve their lives as they see so they can help themselves when the social worker is out of the picture.…

My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…
