As a team player, I understand the importance of teamwork, which is why I am willing to help try my best to help everyone. To build rapport with all clients and colleagues I need to be respectful and genuine to make them feel welcome and safe to come and talk to me about their concerns, problems, or questions. This also ties into having an open door policy that allows others to come and see me when I am in my office. When I am not in my office, I will need to step out of my comfort area and be social, even though I am an introvert, and meet and talk to as many clients as I can establish relationships with clients. I will also need to be very familiar and know about community services or community opportunities for clients, and community network for client

One of the big topics was to not generalize. As a social worker, we will have a lot of “bad egg” cases, yet we cannot assume what their situation is before we do some investigating with the client. Sometimes these clients are made out to be the villain rather than seeing that they may be a victim in certain areas as well. Not only that, but as social workers we can advocate for those who feel like their culture and backgrounds give them no voice. By building that trusting relationship and learning more about the diverse cultures, social workers can help will give a voice to the…

Santa Cruz Residential Recovery is part of the larger organization Encompass Community Services, an organization that is more of an amalgamation of smaller organizations united under one umbrella organization. Encompass Community Services and all of its various programs serve the local Santa Cruz county area, which includes westside Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Aptos, Capitola, Live Oak, Soquel, and Twin Lakes. The majority of the services offered take on a patron-client type relationship as is typical of most non-profit organizations. The specific program I will be working with, Santa Cruz Residential Recovery, has an interesting patron-client relationship as the clients live in the facility full time and essentially treat it as their own home -- they clean, cook, and partake in typical household duties as part of their recovery plan.…

My professional goal is to obtain a Walden’s Master of Social Work degree with a specialization in crisis and trauma intervention. I would especially like to work with individuals affected by crisis, trauma, and grief, and help them overcome their personal and social problems that have, without a doubt, strong negative influences on their lives. Studying at Walden University is important to me, because this school will give me the knowledge and skills that I need to help people make the most of their own abilities, develop skills, and empower them to reach their goals. In the future, after gaining more knowledge and experience about mental health, I want to create mental health service agencies across the United States that will help the…

It was also influenced by my active role different organizations where I was able to provide care for child victims of domestic violence. The desire of furthering my studies started way back when I was volunteering at a non-profit organization with an objective of becoming more familiar in working with children that were coming from a less advantaged families. Initially, the organization I was working for did not give me information about the children I was taking care of; they did not tell me that the children were victims of domestic violence. As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…
