Social Work Field Placement

Improved Essays
Field placement was what I looked forward to the most about entering my Senior Year of the Bachelor of Social Work program. I was enthusiastic to apply my classroom learning into direct practice out in the field. I have always been intrigued in working with at risk youth and finding ways to help them develop into the best version of themselves despite the injustices they have endured. Although, I was cognizant of the multitude of issues that impacts at risk youth I never specifically focused on youth homelessness. Therefore, I was astonished when I discovered that my field placement interview was scheduled at the Covenant House which is a homeless youth shelter in Detroit. Nonetheless, I was not deterred from it.

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

Within the social work practice there is an inherent power differential between practitioner and clients. As I step into a social work role, my social location can affect my work with clients. As a social worker it is important to understand my own unique social location and how oppressions and privileges affect me. How am I uniquely situated in relation to my clients (Girl Action Foundation, 2016)? In understanding my social location, I am essentially questioning what my social location means and challenging pre-conceived assumptions and biases.…

Roughly 85 residents spend their nights at the Community Crossroads Center in a homeless shelter located in Greenville, North Carolina. My initial reaction toward the facility was overall positive, and leaves me optimistic about the field of social work. I firmly concur with the safety precautions, and requirements of both the staff and homeless individuals. The division between male, and female dwellers alongside having a family section creates a secure environment for all participants. My preconceptions of funding regarding homeless shelters being well provided for by the government in conjunction with donations was a complete falsehood.…

This case manager completed the client intake with a family of three, consisting of a single mother and two children. The client intake form will be presented as documented evidence of my work.…

Jacob I really enjoyed reading over your post this week. I think that your subject on a field study is one that we can all identify with. Most if not all of us come in contact with a homeless person or someone we think to be homeless most each and everyday. Not a work day goes by I do not pass one selling newspapers at the base of the Interstate off ramps or begging monies at the intersection close to my residence.…

Working with children and families is one of the most popular areas in the field of social work (Ritter, 2009). One reason for this is because the area offers so many career options. A social worker who chooses to focus on child welfare may devote themselves to Child Protection casework and investigating, foster care casework, child welfare researching, school social work, and many more. However, all these professions have the same goal of ensuring the safety and success of vulnerable children.…

For my senior placement I want to actually be able to see what a social worker does and be able to actually shadow a social worker. I also hope that rather than babysitting I will be able to actually experience what I want to do in the future. I am looking forward to also spending more time at a site and being able to actually see a social worker and client working together. At my senior placement, I also want to actually be able to use what I have learned at a site and understand assessments, interviews, and interventions better.…

My values, attitudes, and assumptions have changed slightly over the course of the MSW program. I think that is partly due to my field placement and the coursework of the MSW program. I am currently placed at a home-based counseling agency called Quality Care in Augusta, GA. For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a therapist. I think I seen movies where a client would come into a psychologist’s office and lay down on a red, comfy couch and tell stories from their childhood, which developed them into the person they are today.…

Homeless families is the population that I am working with at the moment. This population is increasing yearly and the social issue seems like it does not have an end. It is a double trouble that is affecting our society more and more year after year and homeless is any longer an issue of housing. The issue is expanding and it is been related to delinquency, drug abuse and mental issues. This particular issue caught my attention because we are living in a society that apparently provides an equal opportunity everyone, however skyrocketing rent prices, unequal opportunity in education, high cost of health care is making harder to thrive in our society.…

My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…

REVIEW OF ABRAHAM FLEXNER’S ARTICLE “IS SOCIAL WORK A PROFESSION? ” BY ABRAHAM FLEXNER The paper on “ Is social work a profession?” by Abraham Flexner, which was presented at the Forty Second Annual session of The National Conference on Charities and Correction on May 17th, 1915 at Baltimore, Maryland, is said to be an extended argument about whether social work can be considered a profession or not. Flexner shows us a brief picture of how a profession would be, where he brings in a comparison between a professional and an amateur; he portrays the professional as someone whose entire time is devoted to an activity and the latter who is transiently and provisionally so engaged.…
