Over the month at Pathways I did administrative tasks, participated in job orientations, as well as made visits to Bon Air Correctional Facility with one of our Career Coaches. Every day at my field placement I do administrative work such as filing, scanning, and copying participant’s documents. In the social work profession, administrative tasks are done frequently, and a skill that every social worker should have. I also had the opportunity to participate in the new hire job orientation with Face Forward Program Director for the Career Placement Coordinator Position. This was very exciting for me because I am currently involved with the Face Forward Program, and this opportunity has led me to receive more insight about the program that I did not know. I learned more about the Career Placement Coordinator’s job duties: working with databases, creating detailed case notes, making facility visits, providing participants with support, services, resources and much more. To be honest, I might have either added or changed my field of passion from this human services program. Originally, I wanted to get into the mental health field of human services/social work and possibly work in a hospital to care the patients. Instead, I might deal more with children (ages 16 years old and below) as examples from my experiences from my last two internships. As for how I got to this current position, it was from selecting internships between semesters. When ever a clinic I wanted to internship, I had to resort to my backup locations when ever a clinic is not looking or interested in an intern or got no response from them at all.…

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

In a corrections system that is comprised of 2.3 million inmates, an estimated 1 million of those individuals are African American. In 2008, 58% of all inmates were comprised of Hispanics and African Americans. This rate is alarming considering only one quarter of the U.S population is comprised of Hispanics and African Americans (Western, B., & Pettit, B., 2010). It is expected that two- thirds of young African American boys that dropout of school will serve time in the correctional system. Young African American men who are raised in poverty areas are likely to spend time, during their life span, in prison or jail (Western, B., & Pettit, B., 2010).…

(Ngwe, 2004). Having a program like this would help make schools, communities and homes better because it would give the kids something desirable and even fun to look forward to. Other programs would help as well such as the Boys to Men program which is a mentorship for young men. This will give the young black males someone to look up to.…

Throughout this semester we have discussed and practiced various techniques that can be used when working with clients. This semester at Loyola has enhanced my understanding of what it truly means to be a social worker, from the classroom perspective. In my field placement, I do not believe it is directly related to social work, but I was able to use a social worker perspective when interacting with the children in the program. This course was the only course that provided me with hands-on experience of engaging with different types of clients. In my other classes, we did not do case demonstrations instead, we discussed different theories and perspectives about individuals and family systems.…
