Last week Tuesday, October 13, 2015, I walked into the office. Usually, on Tuesdays I have to share the office with another intern from Smith College at Ben Massell Dental Clinic. The intern I share the office with name is Bonnie, fake name, she is working on her MSW. Not soon after I walked into the room, Bonnie said to me “girl let me tell you about Monday.” So of course, I said “what happened” thinking she is going to say something along those lines of she made a mistake with Ndental, the clinic system with patient information. However, I was wrong. Bonnie began to talk about another MSW intern Kimberly, fake name. Especially, Section 2. Social workers’ ethical responsibilities to colleagues. Within the section, there is 2.01 which is regarded to respect. According to the NASW (2008), section 2.01 (b) which states “Social workers should avoid unwarranted negative criticism of colleagues in communications with clients or with other professionals. Unwarranted negative criticism may include demeaning comments that refer to colleagues’ level of competence or individuals.” Another area of knowledge I can apply to this situation is a communication skill with confrontation. When dealing with confrontation, professionals should be aware of one’s personality, style, emotional state, and personal bias before interacting with the individual (Lokko &Stern, 2015). Using verbal and nonverbal communication skills are good with confrontation. Choosing the appropriate location is imperative. Then I am going to tell them “it is unethical to talk to be about that individual in a negative light to me, and I do not appreciate it.” While I am confronting the person, I am going to use verbal and nonverbal communication skills and keep in mind it can go both ways good or bad. Upholding the Code of Ethics is important in the social work profession. The Code of Ethic is what makes social work a professional profession. Therefore, addressing the situation is important.
RELATION OF SITUATION TO COURSE COMPETENCIES:
Competency #1: Identify as a professional social worker and conduct oneself accordingly
Competency #2: Apply social work ethical principles to guide professional practice
This situation relates to both of the course competency, 1 and 2. As a future social worker, I cannot accept that kind of behavior. I am supposed to uphold the Code of Ethics.
