One main reason is being in college, there are your “experiencing years”. With that being said, many students for the first time in their lives are seeing what it is like to live “on their own” and be dependent. Some students can make irrational decisions and do things such as drugs. Being that this is an intro class, this is a class with many new college students and where they are in their “experiencing years” and this is a great opportunity to educate my former classmates on drugs that are out there and there are ways for help. Another main reason as to why I chose this topic is because some of my family has had substance abuse issues and has gone through the social work and welfare system to create a new a better life for themselves. Social workers have put “increasing emphasis since 1960 on value of an ecological, person-in-environment, or systems perspective to social work education (Burke 1997, November 1).” This is of great importance to the social work because these are well needed values needed in order to help treat patients with a substance abuse problem.
