Social Work Case Study: Substance Abuse

Casey states that she is not handling stress well. She tends to self-medicate with alcohol when she is feeling depressed. When dealing with conflict she states that she shuts down emotionally and puts up defenses. Casey is currently not facing any violence in her life. Casey witnessed abuse between her parents throughout her childhood. Casey was sexually abused by her older brother for 5 years during her childhood. Casey tends to follow the same pattern in picking partners who are either physically or sexually abusive or who have had substance abuse issues. In the past Casey, has be unable to cope with challenges in her daily life. She tends to internalize everything, which may have led to the depression. Casey gave up her bedroom so her daughter Christine could sleep in the bedroom, Casey sleeps on the couch. Casey lives in a neighbourhood, where there is a high incidence of crime and she doesn’t feel safe raising her daughter in this neighbourhood. She continues to live there because it is what she can afford. There are no mobility barriers for Casey or her daughter. Casey does not go out of her way to make friends with her neighbours, she keeps to herself, but she will occasionally say hello to her neighbours.
Environmental Factors – Socio-Culture (Social, Spiritual, Strengths and Challenges)
The most important person in Casey’s life is her daughter. Casey’s daughter is very dear to her, along with her mother and two cousins. Casey does not have any other social network that she is connected to currently, but she would love to attend art class with her daughter because she loved to paint before she had Christine. Casey stated that she “used to attend church religiously” but due to how’s she is feeling she cannot seem to find the strength or energy to go.
