Canadian Social Work Understandings Understanding on the Comparisons Perusing the various Canadian literature and comparing them to my past experiences in child protection enlightened me to the differences in practices between the First world and the third world as created and influenced by Western concepts and practices. First, social workers are bestowed with high power that it must be used with caution. The use of power by the social worker contributes and influences how the interaction between the client and the worker will unravel (Gladstone, Dumbrill, Leslie, Koster, Young, & Ismaila, 2012). For these reasons, various theories employed in practice stresses the significance of consciously minimizing the power imbalance within and while…
And Still We Rise The lives and experiences of the twelve inner-city students in Cowin’s “And We Will Rise” is a reality of the many students a school social worker will encounter throughout their career. It’s been said, “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”, this holds truth for the students represented in Cowin’s stories. Dependable and positive parental support becomes a measure to determine if a student can achieve success as they journey through their high school years within the school systems.…
Take Home Midterm When working with young children and their families, a social worker must accomplish multiple tasks. One of the first tasks is to complete an assessment in order to get an idea of the situation, and to identify the immediate issues and areas of concern. Once the assessment has been completed, the social worker may create a treatment plan, which includes both short and long term goals. Based on the assessment and treatment plan, the social worker will be able to select a therapeutic intervention that would best meet the needs of the client. The social worker may also provide additional resources to the client to receive further assistance that is needed to meet their individualized needs.…
Across the United States, child welfare systems and child welfare case workers serve some of the most vulnerable children, youths, and families. Child welfare case workers, classified more broadly as child, family, and school social workers, are individuals who can work for state or local government, as well as for schools, to help children gain access to healthier and happier lives. They work to support families and to protect children from harm through many prevention and intervention services; in particular, case workers work to support children who have been or are at risk of abuse or neglect. However, oftentimes the family the case worker is trying to help greets him or her with hostility and dislike, resulting in the family not willing…
Educational Policy 2.1.7 states that social workers are able to “Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment” (CSWE 2012, p. 6). Social workers understand and apply various concepts of human behavior and growth through assessment and practice models. There are many diverse populations and social workers must utilize multiple perspectives of family systems, rural and urban environments, community factors, and strategic planning to understand and evaluate the unique and individual effects of various contexts on human behavior. Social workers utilize the person-in-environment concept, and strive to inform individuals, groups, and families of problems associated with social justice issues and social problems on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of practice. Through a developed sense of knowledge of human development on each stage of life, Social workers raise awareness and intervene with at-risk individuals and help them to uncover their inherent strengths, and reduce concerns and…
This week was a pretty interesting week. We talked a great deal about the importance of stability and permanency in a foster child’s life. We watched the movie White Oleander. The care planning meeting is central to social work practice with children and families; it is what children and families' social workers do more than any other single activity (except for recording), and it is through the CPM’s that recommendations are made on a daily basis about the risk, protection and welfare of children of looked after children. As a result if is vitally important that social workers reflect and engage in reflection and identify themes is part of improving and growing as a practitioner. Katy’s support worker and representative from her residential home commented that on how Katy had been settling in since her move from her foster carer’s. The support worker said that there had obviously been a ‘honeymoon period’ but this had not lasted long. The first behavioural incident happened the first Monday following the Friday that Katy was placed in the home, when Katy refused to get into a cab to go to school; one of Katy’s residential workers had to take Katy to school because she would not have gone to school if she had to…

Introduction Child welfare is facing rapid transitions and changes both in Ontario and in Canada at large. The arena is currently in need of developing a healthy relationship between the worker, the client, family and the community the client belongs to (Platt, 2008). In social work with children, especially in the child welfare setting, client engagement is one of the crucial challenges. First day of my social work practicum – Today I arrived at the agency as early as 7:40 in the morning. Upon entering I am already looking in speaking with my supervisor and talk about what I will do on my first day. My supervisor is very accommodating, we started our conversation by discussing some matters such as: attendance, tasks, requirements, cases and other personal information. I also assumed that I would get my first case today however, I did not receive any as I still have to learn and familiarize myself to the agency’s protocols and procedures. My supervisor provided me reading material, manual of operation and forms that I would for the case management.…
