Social Work Career

Music teachers and social workers wanted. The career center has job openings for both. Which would be a better choice for me? Spending time leading groups and assisting children are two main opportunities that I enjoy. I would also love to stay involved with music. Now I just have to analyze which one I would like better. Having patience, leadership skills, and being very organized are strengths that I have. Both being a teacher and a social worker involve most of these traits that would help me achieve the job. While both careers are mainly focused around helping children, the job description/work environment, the steps in achieving these jobs, and the future of these careers and the salary are very different. A teacher's job requires observing students to evaluate their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses (“Kindergarten and Elementary”). To effectively help a student, the teacher will need to pick up on their strengths and weaknesses. Along with what they do being different, their work environment and schedules look different too. Kindergarten and elementary school teachers generally work during school hours when students are present (“Kindergarten and Elementary”). Anytime a student is present the teacher must also be present. This needs to be necessary, because students may need one to one help. This also means teachers have most of the summer off. Conversely, social workers work with individuals to help them return to school or their homes or to help them prepare for foster homes (“Social Services” 626). Social workers will travel to their patients most of the time. The only case that would be when the patients go to a clinic. Most social and human service assistants work full time (“Social and Human Service”). School social workers won’t work just the school schedule. They will go work with other older, younger, or the same aged clients when schools are not in session. The duties and work schedules of these two careers are exceedingly
