My career assessment score is ENFJ. Which says that social work is a good career choice for me. When I was younger, I always wanted to be a social worker. Since then, life has taken me down many different paths. I think now is the time for me to circle back to what I originally wanted to do in life. Of course the person I would interview would be a social worker. I interviewed Carmen Nicole Antoine, who is an Infectious Disease Social Worker at Emory University Hospital.
Nicole has worked at Emory for 21 years as a social worker. When Nicole started working at Emory, she had a Bachelor’s Degree in English with a minor in sociology from Dillard University. She continued on to get her

Social workers cannot control how their clients behave, so they much give them the tools and resources they need and continue on with the job. They must also learn to leave their work at their office at the end of the day. This allows you to return to the job day after day without getting burned out. As mentioned in Careers in Psychology a primary limitation of social work is the stress and feeling of helplessness from not being able to identify or supply the resources your clients need. (Traumatology, Feb. 2016). Stressful work conditions, whether caused by individual or situational factors, can lead to health problems and risk of injury. 70% of social workers employed in healthcare settings reported feeling fatigued from stress. 38% of social workers in mental health acknowledged that psychological problems are a stress related health concern. Additionally one fourth of individuals’ employed as child welfare/ family social workers reported they experienced sleep disorders. Nicole has many responsibilities in the office as well as in the community. Once a month, Nicole hosts a women’s wellness group. This is where women with HIV talk about …show more content…
And must maintain case history records and prepare reports. (Flanning, Julie) Nicole is also a grant writer. She applies, renews, and maintains the Ryan White Grant for the Infectious Disease department of Emory University Hospital Midtown. This grant was set up in honor of Ryan White who was a hemophiliac and became a poster child for HIV/AIDS in the US. In response to the HIV epidemic Congress enacted the Ryan White Comprehensive Aids Resources Emergency Act in 1990. This was to improve the quality and availability of care for low income, uninsured, and under insured individuals and families affected by HIV. In 1990 four months after Ryan White died Congress enacted the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Care Act in his honor. Under this act is the Ryan White Grant. This grant allows Nicole and the other social workers on her team to use the millions of dollars awardable to help HIV/AIDS patients pay for food, doctor visits, glasses, dentists, utilities, copays, Marta cards, and many other needs. Every three years Nicole is responsible for recertification of this program for Emory University Hospitals Infectious disease clinic. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, median pay for social workers in 2014 was $45,000 per year, or $21.88 per hour. The job outlook from 2014-2024 is 12%, which the handbook says is faster growth than average. According to

Child welfare social workers were made to ensure that children are being treated right, that they are socially, mentally and physically taken care of. “If you don’t have the heart, just leave those kids the hell alone.” These words of Hannah Freese reflect a strong moral of social work. I believe if you do not have the kindness or compassion to help with a family who is struggling and losing everything, than you will only hurt them more than you will help them. Being too compassionate though, is something that needs to be reflected on. While you have to rip a kid from their parent and hold back the tears as they child screams and begs you to let them stay, you have to understand it is for their protection and safety.…

The “Social Worker” article written by The U.S Department of Labor informs me about the duties I would have when pursuing this career. It writes, “Social workers typically do the following: […] [h]elp clients adjust to changes and challenges in their lives, such as illness, divorce, or unemployment […,] [e]valuate services provided to ensure that they are effective […,and] [p]rovide psychotherapy services” (United States). My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…
