Throughout this semester in “Introduction to Social Welfare’, we have discussed the history of social work in Canada, social work and health and the role of women in social work as well as several other topics. Although I have learned numerous information involving social work and topics surrounding their practices, I will not be pursing a career in social work. Currently being in my fourth year of criminology and graduation in the spring of 2017 I plan on continuing my education at a college studying paralegal. As a paralegal I plan on working one-on-one with lawyers and their clients as well as representing my own clients in small claims court and with other legal documents that a paralegal is allowed to focus on. I need to engage with marginalized communities more. I have been extremely busy throughout my four years at Laurier, between school and work I often do no find much time for other activities. However, I recognize this needs to change as I more forward in my career to becoming a paralegal. I want to be able to apply my knowledge but also my experience with these groups of people. Being able to understand your clients on a personal level is an important feat. Unfortunately I have not been able to do so. In the near future I would like to begin volunteering at “The Bridges” the homeless shelter located in my hometown Cambridge Ontario. There I will encounter numerous people who can open my eyes to some of the disparities happening in society today. It is safe to hide in a bubble and believe all is alright in the world. Although, if you are entering a field that deals with all different kinds of people it is better to be able to understand where they are coming from. I also need to become less judgmental of certain groups. It is easy to watch the news every night and create thoughts and feelings against people who you do not even know. I acknowledge that I do this and it is something that I want to work on so that I can stop the discrimination of people in our society. Recently I was in Brantford watching a court case and found myself judging the
