Social work as a career is looked down on by many people. When someone hears that I am going to college to achieve my degree in social work they say, “you will never make a good living off the pay a social worker makes.” To me money doesn’t matter as long as you love your job. My parents have always told me that I need to choose a job instead of letting the job choose me. Social work is the career I am choosing because helping others is what makes me happy. There is so much to give as a social worker; however, a lot of people only look at the negative sides of a social worker's job. I believe that there are many positives sides to a social worker’s job as well. There will be challenges along the way that I will have to face depending on what area of social work I decide to work in but I know that I will have accomplishments of helping people better their situations as well that will make my job worthwhile. I am seeing through these experiences why I chose to become a social work major instead of a nursing student. My desire to help people is why I thought I wanted to become a nurse: however, I can see that becoming a social worker is going to give me that same pleasure but in a different way. I know that becoming a social worker is going to allow me to help others through their difficult times. I am learning that there are several different fields to work in as a social worker. I am excited to learn all these different fields as I work through my social work major. These experiences have shaped my life and have inspired me to become a social worker so I can make an impact in someone else’s
