I have been investigating the challenges people are faced with. To that end I read Judith Herman’s book ‘Trauma and Recovery’. This book has spurred on my passion for the subject due to the way Judith informs us about what PTSD is, how it comes about, and how to deal with it.
Working whilst studying has had the added advantage of teaching me to deal with issues such as time management which I now know are transferable skills for me to be successful in the course but also when working in the field. As part of my research, I attended student transfer day and spoke with the advisor over the program. It was the high standards and professionalism that impressed me the most and confirmed UHD is most suitable for me.
As a mature student I am also looking forward to the increased opportunities for a varied social life offered by UHD and to sampling the delights of some of the student organizations. My ninth-grade year my parents moved us to Alief with the attempt to give us a better life. Although it was deemed as a better area, it was not all that people perceived it to be. I was still surrounded by the disadvantaged people of my society. Rarely people from my communities attended college or even graduate from high school and my family were not exceptions. My parents always preached how important graduating from high school was but always left college as an option. I didn’t have a job after high school so I enrolled in Houston Community College. I did not have to slightest clue of what I wanted to do and I did not have a knowledgeable support system. I managed to do horribly for the spring and fall semester of 2008. Surrounded by people living with the notion that school isn’t the only way to be successful I decided to end my college career and work my way through life. I had a change of heart fall 2009. I applied to Lamar Institute of Technology and was accepted with no financial assistance. Determined to give their child an opportunity they weren’t afforded, my parents agreed to pay for my education themselves. Unfortunately, my younger sister became pregnant and my parents were unable to pay the entire tuition resulting in the institution indicating they had dropped me from my classes. Neither my parents nor myself was knowledgeable at the time that there was more I could have done. I packed my belongings and
