In our reading we learned that the civil war had a tremendous impact on our social welfare system for the good . It laid the groundwork for our public health system. In our reading we learned how inhumane and unsanitary many of the almshouses were through Dorothea Dix writing however the civil war brought even more diseases, and unsanitary living condition, and lack of medical supplies (Trattner, 1999).Furthermore the conditioned caused citizens to volunteer their services to ensure that soldiers were getting the adequate care they needed. Again in our history people believed it was their moral obligation to help the poor. In addition the organization was was established by private citizens and not by the government.
