The first way deviance exists is when a person or persons violate a social norm or rule. The second way is when groups or other persons judge and evaluate the norm or rule violation. The third way is when the likelihood of negative social reactions to the violations. When it comes to the resort, some individuals were being deviant, while others weren’t. One way an individual violated the social norms was that they did not have an actual snowsuit on. A few people from our trip, including me, did not have a snowsuit. I noticed that we got looked at in a weird way because we basically stood out from everybody else. We didn’t “look” the same as everybody else, but we did not get treated any differently because of it. Another way is that majority of our group needed skiing or snowboarding lessons because they didn’t know how to ski or snowboard. When we went over to the part of the resort that was for lessons, it was broken down into two sections: snowboarding lessons and skiing lessons. Within those two sections, there were three different levels of lessons beginner, intermediate, and expert. A good way that we were deviant was the fact that we didn’t know how to ski and we ended up getting lessons for it. To me, that was positive deviance because we gained something from those lessons. We learned how to ski and had a goof time doing it too. This proves that not all deviance is bad and that what we did as individuals isn’t wrong. Overall the Wintergreen Ski Resort made my observations worth it.
We define deviance as a violation of a social rule or norm. Social norms can be violated in a positive or negative way. Some individuals choose to be deviant in a negative way that is intentional. Whereas others with be deviant in a positive way and they are willing to go against what is considered “normal” and question it. Wintergreen Ski Resort had many different social norms that were violated by the individuals who took part in the
