Social work is a profession of helping individuals, groups of people, and society as a whole. Macro and micro are two different concentrations of social work. The values of social work are engrained in the practice and knowledge of these values is important to practice social work competently. Social systems theory is a large part of the social work profession, and strategies within this perspective are adapted by many social workers’. Some believe it to be the overarching, unifying theory of social work, but others do not agree with this perspective.
Social Work and Its Values Social work is a diverse profession, but has the primary goal of helping those in need or who have been oppressed. Social work professionals usually concentrate on one of two areas, macro or micro. The macro focused social worker works toward making the community or society as a whole better. The micro social worker, also called the clinical social worker, focuses on working with individuals. These areas of social work focus on bringing social justice and individual well-being (Reamer, 2013). The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) addresses a specific set of values that should be included in all social work practice, whether it is macro or micro. These values include service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence (NASW, 2016). The definition of social work is based on these core values.
