Social Tension Process Analysis

America has a lot of social tension during our current presidency. On the bright side, students of all ages are interested and want to make in a difference in our world. Steven Zemelman describes a process that teacher should use to influence not only talk, but action as well in their student’s community. There are five steps: 1) Identify issues in lives and community. 2) Research topic and how to change or improve situation. 3) Plan action by finding out who or what is in charge and how to present to them. 4) Carry out action. 5) Reflect on effort. Two important parts of this process are allowing as much decision making as possible for students, and actually carry out the plan. The plan may not always happen, but students value actually being heard.
Step one includes identifying the problem. The best way to do this is to just ask the students what they think is an issue. Kids usually have a lot of opinions about their school or community.

It is very beneficial for the students to be very knowledgable of the topic at hand. When studying the issue, they should seek different perspectives. Seeing how other people see it makes them that much more informed.
Step three includes finding solutions and planning. Students should consider many factors of the issue. Also knowing many different causes of the problem allows the students to create more creative plans in solving it. Also while they plan, they should prepare ways to communicate their actions by making flyers, letters, presentations, etc.
Step four: Act. When students are carrying out the plan, you want to allow them to do as much as they can by themselves. The teachers should primarily cheer on the students instead of step in.
Step 5: Reflection. It is important that students reflect on their work. When they reflect, they are able to see all they accomplish or what to do different next time. Also, teachers can observe what their students did or did not
