Scholarly Research: The Importance Of Social Support

Having family and friends support something you love doing is very important. It is also known as social support. “Social support means having friends and other people, including family, to turn to in times of need or crisis to give you a broader focus and positive self-image” (University of Minnesota, 2013). The University of Minnesota also explains, “social support means having friends and other people, including family, to turn to in times of need or crisis to give you a broader focus and positive self-image.” There needs to be more social support now days especially for students. “Social support represents an important individual resource that has been associated with multiple indices of adaptive functioning and resiliency” (Di Fabio, 2015). This can lead to emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence allows us to understand our character and our personality traits. With social support, it allows us to be accepted for who we are and our differences. “Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize your emotions, understand what they 're telling you, and realize how your emotions affect people around you. It also involves your perception of others: when you understand how they feel, this allows you to manage relationships more effective” (Smith, 2015). With social support, it allows us to be who we truly are and when that takes place we become more successful as a person and improving our lives on a daily bases. She helped me get everything set up and made sure I was on top of things. Even when I struggled and told my mom I wanted to keep going, she found different ways to get me to where I needed to be. After I graduated with my associates I told my mom that I wanted to continue and work toward a higher degree. I let her know that I wanted to go to school online and experience a whole new diversity that I was not used too. My husband was unsure at the time, but once he started seeing how successful I was he felt this was the best thing for me. With my mom already knowing that I was going to be successful no matter what path I decided to take in life, it gave my husband assurance. Those two have been my support from the start and I would not have it any different. I have been accepted into the organization, Sigma Epsilon Kappa through Ashford University. I told everyone about my acceptance and the two who were most excited was my mom and husband. I am truly grateful for these two because they have been there for me and I am glad they are here to see me succeed. With their support, it has allowed me to reach out to others to support them.
