REACTION PAPER 4
Social studies are an integrated study of people, society, and history. It covers the how and why societies are found and how what we know as a people emerges. It encourages children to think of the world at large i.e. the many places humans live in the world. It is important because through it students begin to open their minds to the different cultures in the world and can make comparisons between their culture and the cultures of others. It promotes an acceptance of who other people are and also an acceptance of the differences in cultural practices. Students learn to view the world from different lenses and in that, way expand their worldview.

I would want to get my students to understand that generally in the past humans settled in places close to food, water, and other geographical features that support the sustenance of life. Nowadays, people still settle for these reasons, but in addition business, jobs and reactional attractions are other reasons people choose to settle in places of extreme climatic conditions like Alaska. This connects human settlements with geography. To achieve this, I will first begin by questioning students about their most basic need. I could begin by asking them to think about what they needed to survival on a daily basis i.e. their most basic needs. I would ask “what do you think everybody needs most to survive? Think about it. It’s not just you, but your dad, your classmates, your neighbors, people all over the world. If we don’t have these things we will be unhappy, sick and lack the energy to do our daily activities? The students will be told to seek out places in the world where they believe people will want to settle and we will compare their choices with actual data on such places on the internet. This will promote student autonomy and decision-making skills. It also would put students at the center of the learning experience. To get them ready for this activity I would ensure that my instructions are clear. I would achieve this by talking to them about it and also making directions available in other forms e.g. paper form (pictures with few words) to help remind them in case they forget, but also to keep the class
