Social Studies Midterm

Throughout my life as a student, it has always been difficult for me to understand why it is so important to do well in school, until one day when my parents thought of the idea to start rewarding me in exchange for good grades. I caught on quickly to the idea of making exceptional grades for the things that I desire. A prime example is my 870 Remington, 12-gauge shotgun that I received for earning an “A” on my Social Studies midterm. This was no ordinary shotgun. These specific shotguns were handcrafted and customized to fit young boys like myself at the time.
I was in eighth grade when Ducks Unlimited hosted a banquet at a local plantation home. These events were only possible if enough sponsors filled the attendance list. Therefore, these banquets were not in town often due to the lack of sponsors. The chances to attend this banquet were very slim. My mother refused to let me go unless I promised to make an A on my midterm. So, as excited as I was I

He said, “I know I messed up, but if Adam somehow makes an A tomorrow on his midterm I will buy him a brand new shotgun!” I was so excited when I heard him say this!
My mother thought that this wasn’t too bad of an idea considering how he neglected to get me home with enough time to study. Of course I agreed and then headed off to bed. The next morning I woke up two hours earlier than usual to study extensively. It was hard to wake up that early because I had gotten home so late the night before. I was determined to get that shotgun. I had a goal to reach and I was going to achieve it.
When the time came to take the test I had never felt more confident. Due to the fact that I finished the test first, I was nervous that I perhaps didn’t take my time. Throughout the day I waited impatiently for the grades to be posted online. I later found out that I made a ninety-seven percent! I was filled with a mixture of joy and

So far, my school experience has been quite similar to the experiences described in The Game of School by Robert Fried because I have been focusing on getting good grades on homework, tests, and quizzes instead of learning for myself. In the article, Fried described how students aim for good grades to please their parents, or to impress colleges. Before sending in requests for classes at MVHS, my parents pushed me to take as many honors classes as possible. The maximum number of honors classes for freshman was two, and the only honors classes were for Biology and Geometry. For me, I never really enjoyed math, but my mom still pressured me into taking it, to do it for “college application purposes”.…

A formal and an informative tone was used. She tried to get her point across that inflation of grades should not be acceptable and it is happening too often. This was emphasized when she proclaimed, "I had the numbers to back me up, and I wouldn't budge on her grade," after another student asked her if she could bump up her B-minus. Shepard includes experiences from her own life to make this article more personal. The story of even her own son receiving a bad grade helps drive her point that A's aren't always crucial.…

Friday was the big test day. When I entered the classroom, I overheard some of my peers lament about how tired they were from staying up so late trying to study. I was confident that I would do great, and yet a small part of me was still nervous that I would fail. When our instructor handed out the tests only the sound of pencil scratching paper could be heard. When we completed our tests we were allowed to leave, so when I finished mine I was out in a flash.…

School is a controversial topic for many. Some believe that the education system is flawed and that ultimately leads to the downfall of the students. Others believe that the students are the problem. They believe that student do not want to put in the effort to properly learn and that is causing the education system to downgrade. The articles In Praise of The F Word by Mary Sherry and Making the Grade by Kurt Wiesenfeld depict how opposing the views can get.…

My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…

Before I adopted this aphorism I would always go for the bare minimum and always get an average grade or reward. Then i adopted this aphorism into my life. “ Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled, and that has made all the difference-Robert Frost. After that I started achieving things that I couldn't do before because it was far too much work to do. I no longer accepted average grades and started accepting high grades.…

“According to the most recent Phi Delta Kappa poll, only one out of four Americans say students should be paid for their grades” (Flannery). As Alfie Kohn said, the bigger the reward, the bigger the damage done (Flannery). Instead of using a physical reward such as money, there should be encouragement given when a student is working hard no matter the outcome. Money cannot buy children's feelings towards themselves and what they can accomplish. While some students may argue that being paid for good grades is beneficial, financial compensation for high marks on a report card does not build good character traits and can even be detrimental to kids for years to come.…
