Marx was one of many sociologists to study social class and his aim was to understand why there was so much poverty in such a wealthy world. 20% of the world are suffering from poverty, are malnourished and in severe danger of dying. Race plays a major role in our everyday lives and sociologists study the results and outcomes of these situations. Inequality of conditions is studied under Social Inequality and it refers to income, wealth and housing. Inequality of conditions is seen all around Ireland especially in Dublin as the number of homeless people living on the streets is increasing rapidly each year and the number of travellers living in hidden fields is increasing also. The study of sociology and discrimination was evident last week, when a tragic incident occurred in Carrickmines, leaving members of the travelling community homeless and grieving the loss of loved ones. Ten people were killed due to an accidental fire, five of these where under the age of ten. Organisations such as Pavee Point are trying to change Travellers’ status, living conditions and are progressing in the fight against racism and discrimination. People suffering from social inequality are only labelled as inferior by higher and much more powerful groups in society and are often singled out by others and treated unfairly. This is where the study of sociology comes into play and is essential in order for human society to function equally amongst all individuals.
It is evident in today’s society that sociology has helped enrich human culture and has taught us many ways in how to approach everyday situations. Sociology
